Woman killed by gas leak at home

A woman has died and a man is fighting for his life in hospital after a suspected carbon monoxide gas leak at their home in west London.
Police were called to the couple's home after worried family members and employers said they were unable to contact them.

When officers went inside the flat in Wooldridge Close, Bedfont, at about 8.20pm on Wednesday, they found the couple collapsed inside.

The Metropolitan Police said paramedics and fire brigade staff were called and the woman, aged 26, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man, aged 32, was taken to a west London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Other residents were evacuated from the block for about five hours while safety checks were carried out by the fire brigade.

Detectives from Scotland Yard's specialist crime directorate are investigating the death.

A spokesman said early indications are that the couple suffered carbon monoxide poisoning but officers are keeping an open mind about the cause.
