We're all still cooking on gas!

TENANTS are celebrating after being told by Pennine Housing that they can keep their gas cookers, rather than having to switch to electric.

Pennine Housing has agreed to improve the kitchen ventilation at properties in Southgate, Elland, to ensure it complies with the latest safety standards.

Dozens of people living in and around Calder House, Quarmby House and Marlborough House were told on July 20 their flats did not have suitable ventilation for gas ovens and that they must be disconnected or removed.

Housing chiefs even went to the trouble of teaming up with Calderdale Credit Union to find low-interest loans for those affected.

But after a further detailed survey with Corgi inspectors, tenants have been told they can keep their gas appliances.

"When the issue was discovered by our gas engineers, we had to take a safety-first approach until we could arrange with Corgi to do a detailed inspection," said Pennine spokesman Nasar Haq.

"We have been working closely with Corgi to resolve the issue and the good news is that Pennine can make some modifications to the kitchen ventilation which will allow those tenants who are affected, to run their gas cookers safely."

Pennine will cover the cost of the work and will be making appointments with tenants from today.
