Wales carbon monoxide danger
Wales is one of four regions in the UK where people are more likely to suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Llanelli AM Helen Mary Jones today expressed concern over this after receiving a report from the national watchdog for gas safety in the UK, CORGI .
Helen Mary Jones said:
"The findings of this report are very worrying and I was shocked when I saw Wales alongside Yorkshire, the Midlands and the North East as a CO (carbon monoxide) hotspot.
"Since January 2006 there have been 6 fatalities and 14 casualties from CO poisoning and the public needs to be more aware of the potential dangers.
"The report also indicates that in the UK in the past 16 months 50% of those killed or injured were the elderly or children. The government must make sure these vulnerable groups are given better information about the dangers and more support should be offered.
"It is not just these groups that need to be informed, we all need to be aware of this issue. While 90% of the population has a smoke alarm, 69% don't have a CO alarm and that is something that must be addressed."
