South-west gets green heat cash injection
Community and commercial buildings in the south-west are to up their renewable energy use after a substantial cash injection from local authorities.
The South West of England Regional Development Agency has been awarded £3 million from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to invest in a range of bioheat projects.
Run by south-west renewable energy agency Regen SW, the region's bioheat programme is intended to identify and provide support to potential renewable energy projects, as well as set up a supply chain to provide wood fuel and training courses relevant to the industry.
"Wood heating is coming of age, and we now have a range of bioheat projects that are, quite literally, oven-ready for investment," explained Matthew Spencer, chief executive of Regen SW.
He added: "Defra's funding will allow some of the region's biggest heat users to make the switch from oil and gas to wood heating."
Experts suggest that around 7,000 tonnes of carbon could be saved in the south-west every year if oil-fired heating systems are replaced with wood-fuelled systems such as biomass boilers.
