Safety advice issued to help avoid poisoning
KENT Fire and Rescue Service is warning people to take care when lighting chimney fires in the coming winter months.
Firefighters are also urging people to follow some simple safety tips to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
They are encouraging residents to call the service's community safety team with any questions about fire safety.
advertisement Head of community safety Stuart Skilton said: "Before you use your chimney, it is essential to ensure it has recently been swept.
"Whatever fuel you burn, it is important the chimney is kept clean and you do not allow soot or ash to build up."
The team is also urging people to get all heating appliances checked regularly by a Corgi-registered engineer to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Mr Skilton added: "If you have a faulty appliance, or your home is not properly ventilated, or the chimney or flue is blocked, you risk carbon monoxide poisoning."
