Police step up action to counter boiler thieves

Police in Humberside and south Wales are to begin a crackdown on thieves who have been targeting housing regeneration schemes to steal boilers and pipework.

According to a report on hvnplus.co.uk, Cardiff council said it has had to pay more than £100,000 to cover damage caused by boiler thieves.

Humberside police also pointed out the dangers of ripping out pipe work as it exposes gas and electricity supplies.

PC Craig Nixon said: "Criminals see these properties as easy targets. These people are putting themselves at risk of serious harm, building sites are dangerous places."

Cardiff council reports that eight per cent of its vacant housing has been targeted by boiler and copper piping thieves, with 80 boilers reported stolen last year.

Manager of Cardiff council's vacant housing stock, Chris Hughes, also claims that some boilers appear to be "getting stolen to order", as the thieves are capping pipes after removing boilers.

In related news, OFTEC recently said it will take a tougher stance on gas fitters unlawfully using its logo.
