Pipe dream a reality for plumbing students

SKILLED plumbing students are leading the way in their industry after forging links with some of the country's leading employers.

Students at West Cheshire College, studying the City & Guilds certificate in plumbing, have been singled out for awards after training on some leading brands.

Grant Norton, 28, from Chester, is a former window cleaner who has just completed four years of training at the college to qualify with a Level 3 City & Guilds technical certificate in plumbing. Employed as a plumber for the past three years with Chester-based company, Professor Plumb, Grant was commended for his work after receiving a runner-up prize in a national competition by Worcester Bosch.

Grant said: "I started my training from scratch at the college and within a year I had secured work with a local employer. I'm going through my exams to get Corgi registered and hope to own my own plumbing business one day."

Equipment and specific training has also been provided by Worcester Bosch group who donated boilers and technical support to the college, while Aqualisa Showers donated showers for the training room.

Also celebrating is student Francis Worthington, 34, from Ellesmere Port, who recently received a Freemen & Guilds award while completing his City & Guilds certificate in plumbing. Francis received the Smiths, Cutlers and Plumbers award for his above average marks in all of his job-related knowledge tests and for obtaining a high standard of craftsmanship during his practical units.
