PLUMBERS CARBON MONOXIDE WARNING

A bay plumber and gas heating specialist is warning of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.Ty Harnett, 33, owner of Maxi Glow Plumbing and Gas Heating Services based at The Willows, Torquay claims he has to condemn 45 per cent of boilers, some leaking potentially fatal carbon monoxide and others that do not comply with new regulations.

He said that aging boilers can be dangerous if they have not been properly serviced.

Mr Harnett, pictured right, said: "I want to highlight the dangers in the Bay because it could save lives. The symptoms could easily be mistaken for something else.

"Most gas users think of explosions when considering the risks from gas, but this is a very rare occurrence and the public needs to be reminded that the major risk with gas comes from the effects of neglected and poorly maintained gas appliances," he said.

Signs to look out for at home include if the pilot light frequently extinguishes, black sooting deposits on or around appliance casing and flue pipe and ragged yellow or orange flames.

Carbon monoxide poisoning creates flu-like symptoms, including severe headaches, chest pains and nausea.
