New toilets to flush away cultural differences at 2008 Games

Toilets at venues for the Beijing Olympic Games are being re-fitted to suit the needs of foreign athletes.

Reservations had been expressed about western visitors using traditional Chinese 'squat' toilets instead of the sit-down kind.

"In my personal point of view, there are cultural differences between Chinese and western people. Chinese are more used to squat toilets," confirmed Yao Hui, a senior official responsible for the management of Olympic venues.

The manager went on to tell reporters that "toilet alteration projects" will be carried out at the Bird's Nest (national stadium), the Water Cube and National Indoor Stadium - if technical conditions permit - while a similar project will be expanded to more of the 31 venues in the city.

According to the Beijing Evening Post, the city has 5,200 public toilets - more than anywhere else in the world.

Last year, organisers of the Games also revealed that eco-friendly heat pumps will provide heating and cooling systems in an effort to 'green' this year's event.
