New boiler predicted to cut carbon and heating costs

A new biomass boiler lined up to be installed at Bradford University is predicted to save around 500 tonnes of carbon every year.

Replacing three gas-fired boilers, the device is being funded by the institution with help from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, according to the Telegraph & Argus.

The university's energy officer, Rob Bradley, explained to the newspaper that the boiler has been drafted in to help the organisation tackle upcoming legislation.

He remarked: "The government has announced it will cap building-related carbon emissions, and from 2010 large organisations such as ourselves will be legally required to buy and sell carbon to meet these mandatory targets."

Mr Bradley claimed that Bradford University currently uses over 47 million kilowatts of energy every year, estimated to cost £2.5 million and release around 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Earlier this month, energy-saving pundits suggested that UK homeowners who opt for a modern condensing boiler could stand to save up to £200 on their annual heating bills.
