New boiler a cost effective green measure

Investing in a new boiler is one of the most cost-effective ways to save funds and boost the green credentials of your home, it has been suggested.

According to property specialists at the Residential Landlord website, the initial costs of a new heating system should not be a disincentive for individuals and families, as lower heating bills steadily return the cash.

"If your boiler is over 15 years old it's probably time to replace it, and you'll get a better rating if you combine it with modern heating controls," the site advised.

Furthermore, homeowners keen to save space are directed towards combination boilers, as they do not necessitate a tank for hot water storage but instead heat water directly from the mains as it is used.

Hot water tank jackets are also put forward as an energy-efficiency booster, while the website goes on to point out that a range of financial benefits are available for landlords and homeowners who demonstrate their green efforts.

The government's Landlord's Energy Saving Allowance is one such benefit, enabling individuals to reduce their income tax when they boost their properties' insulation and heat-saving attributes.

Earlier this month, communities minister Iain Wright urged business owners to boost insulation and take up the "green buildings challenge" as part of the government's drive to reduce the UK's carbon footprint.
