MP backs gas safety calls

A North-east MP has put his name to a campaign to tackle carbon monoxide poisoning.

Lib Dem West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MP Sir Robert Smith signed a Commons motion raising concerns about the number of incidents connected to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sir Robert was concerned to see 102 carbon monoxide incidents claimed 50 lives and caused 218 injuries, between January 1, 2006, and April 1, 2007, in the UK. Most were due to faults or poor maintenance.

Sir Robert said: "The number of carbon monoxide poisoning incidents a year is very worrying.

"Especially when you look into the statistics and realise 54% of the injuries and 50% of the deaths come from vulnerable groups in our communities including children and the elderly."

Many incidents could be avoided if the risks were better understood and gas equipment was regularly checked by a Corgi-registered gas fitter, he said.
