London school plugs into power of sun

East Dulwich school children are set to be surprised by the power of sun upon returning from their half-term holidays, it has emerged.

Goodrich Community Primary School teamed up with one of the UK's leading energy suppliers EDF - who also fund boiler and heat pump devices - to introduce solar panels that will provide a new source of power to their education.

Supported by £10,700 from EDF's green fund and £8,560 from the government's low carbon buildings programme, the project was completed during the holidays and will help provide the children with first-hand experience of renewable energy.

Carbon dioxide reductions and power generated by the solar panels will be recorded on the school's computer system.

"We have tried hard not to tell the children too much about the project so this will be a big surprise for them. It will enable our pupils to have a greater understanding of eco-living, help them with scientific study and give us a chance to teach them about global issues such as climate change," said Shirley Patterson, head teacher at Goodrich Community Primary School.

This week EDA also revealed that a ground source heat pump will be operational at a new community hall in Woolsery, Devon, through the use of solar panels and a 15-metre high wind turbine
