Leaking boiler to blame for couple\'s death
An inquest into the deaths of Raymond and Joyce Gauvain in October had returned a verdict of accidental death due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Raymond, 63, and Joyce, 67, were found dead in their St Martins home on 4th October, after a concerned neighbour called the Police when she couldn't contact them. An inquest opened on 15th October concluded that the death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning but was adjourned for further investigations to be made.
Those enquiries discovered that a solid fuel Rayburn MF boiler and range had been leaking carbon monoxide through faulty seals. The flue was also not working properly and there was a lack of ventilation for the appliance. An expert study found very high levels of carbon monoxide being produced when it was lit.
The appliance had been bought in 1988 and did not appear to have been serviced since, while having been in almost constant use for the past twenty years.
The Court expressed their sympathy for the friends and family of the deceased.
