Leader+ helps Derbyshire's young people contribute to the local rural economy

Leader+ funding is helping three young people from the Peak District to stay in the area and contribute to the local economy.

The Youth Enterprise Project is currently supporting a mini digger business run by Thomas Hadfield and Georgina Hardwick from Earl Sterndale and Pete Smethurst's Bakewell-based plumbing company.

Thomas (27) and Georgina (19) have set up the mini digger business 'TF Hadfield' renting the machine on either a self-drive or with operative basis. So far they have purchased a small second hand machine and have applied to the Youth Enterprise project for funding to purchase a second larger machine and rock breaker. Whilst being early days in the life of the business, they have already been inundated with phone calls as a result of local advertising. This has led to work in constructing driveways, footings, landscaping and rock breaking.

Thomas is from a farming family in Tideswell and with the decline in farming incomes has had to look to set up his own business outside of the traditional farming activity. He is currently taking his digger driving tests to gain accreditation for the knowledge he has gained over the past few years and so be able to demonstrate his competency to prospective customers. In the longer term Thomas & Georgina aim to set up their own website and be in a position where they can employ other local staff.

Peter Smethurst is a fully qualified plumber and heating engineer, who has set up his own business based in Bakewell. Being CORGI registered means he is already experiencing a high level of interest from customers and has applied to the Youth Enterprise Project for funding to purchase a van and other specialist equipment.

The Youth Enterprise Project is run by The Princes Trust on behalf of LEADER+.

Co-ordinator Mark Rushworth said:

"So far the project has helped over 20 young people to set up their own business in the Peak District area. The project is now in its third and final year and is looking to increase this number to over 30 people. It is important to us that young people who hail from the Peak District and want to stay in the area to build their futures can do so. We are delighted to be able to support these latest ventures."
