Landlord fined £12k over fires
HEALTH and safety chiefs yesterday said landlord Steven Dickens potentially endangered tenants’ lives after failing to maintain gas fires at properties.
Dickens, of Marine Drive, Rhos on Sea, was hit with a £12,000 fine at Warrington Crown Court yesterday.
He had pleaded guilty to six charges relating to poor maintenance of gas fires at a number of his properties in Conwy county.
The 43-year-old was also ordered to pay £18,740 costs.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) chiefs brought the charges against Mr Dickens under the Gas Safety Act 1998 “for failures to maintain gas fires and the flues which serve them, and to ensure that the fires and flues were checked for safety”

Yesterday a HSE spokesman said: “This case serves as a reminder to landlords that they have a duty to ensure gas appliances in the properties they are letting are properly maintained by personnel who have had their competence assessed by CORGI.
“They should also ensure that appliances are given a safety check every 12 months, and provide tenants with the relevant gas safety certificate as required under the law
