£1,600 fine for false plumber

AN ENFIELD plumber has been ordered to pay £1,600 compensation and £400 costs by Enfield Magistrates for falsely claiming to be CORGI registered.

John Burton, of Severn Drive, was brought before magistrates after an Enfield Council Trading Standard's investigation.

The court heard how Mr Burton had fitted a gas boiler claiming he and a sub-contractor were both CORGI registered.

But after problems, the boiler was inspected by CORGI and was taken out of use due to poor fitting.

The issue was referred to Enfield Council's Trading Standards team, which discovered that Mr Burton and the unnamed sub-contractor were not CORGI registered plumbers.

Magistrates decided Mr Burton should pay the consumer £1,600 in compensation rather than issue a fine.

Sue McDaid, head of Trading Standards, said: "I hope this successful prosecution will send a message out there that we will have no hesitation to take strong action to protect Enfield consumers.

"I urge residents to ensure plumbers are CORGI registered with the organisation and if they are not, report them to us and we will investigate."
