Heat pump to provide green power for Hull school

Eco-friendly heat pump technology is being used to boost the green credentials of a primary school in Hull.

Builders at the site of the Fifth Avenue establishment will harness the earth's natural heat for the school, which they claim represents the "future" of the city's public sector buildings.

The Yorkshire Post reports that workers have laid around five kilometres of pipework for an electrically-powered ground source heat pump which will provide both heat and hot water.

Energy to run the pump will be generated from two wind turbines, while rainwater harvesting systems will also be employed to cut carbon emissions and help reduce bills.

Hull council representatives outlined plans to the newspaper for all the city's buildings to be carbon-neutral by 2050.

"In my book it is a no-brainer - you have to do something different," remarked energy project manager John Bell.

"The likelihood of energy becoming cheap again is very, very remote. The likelihood is that it is going to rise well beyond inflation," he added.

Heat pumps, such as those manufactured by Activair and Trianco, are said to use less than half the electricity of conventional heating and cooling systems.
