Heat pump funding for Scots

Homeowners in Scotland are to get more funding for eco-upgrades such as heat pumps, solar panels and windmills, it has emerged.

The country's finance secretary, John Swinney, revealed that £13.5 million per year will be made available for the next three years so that householders, small businesses and local communities can generate their own green energy.

"Everyone has a part to play and the Scottish government is providing strong leadership by tripling funding support to encourage householders, businesses and community projects to generate their own renewable energy," remarked Mr Swinney.

He explained that under the proposals, householders will be able to access grants of up to £4,000 and community groups up to £100,000 for fitting alternative energy sources like heat pumps.

Small business owners will also be able to avail of microgeneration loans, with this technology predicted to overtake conventional boilers in the coming years.

Fitting a ground-source heat pump at an average house in Edinburgh is estimated to cost between £10,000 and £15,000, although specialists including Trianco and Dimplex note that such costs are promptly returned through savings in fuel bills.
