Heat pump contributes to Devon hall green legacy

A community hall in Devon has become one of the first in the south-west to be powered by a ground source heat pump, solar panels and a wind turbine.

Woolsery's sports and community hall was able to have a renewable makeover with financial help from EDF Energy's green fund, the government's Low Carbon Building Programme and another renewable energy initiative exclusive to the Devon area.

The low-carbon building's wind turbine and solar panels will provide electricity, while the ground source heat pump will use heat from the sun, trapped below ground, to provide underfloor heating.

Peter Hofman, EDF Energy's director of sustainable futures, explained that the renewable makeover will cut the building's carbon emissions by around 12 tonnes every year.

"We hope this project will leave a lasting legacy on the environment by shaping the thinking and behaviour of people who have their whole lives ahead of them as energy consumers," he added.

Eco-experts have pointed out that an added benefit of such green makeovers is the ability to sell surplus power back into the electricity grid.
