Ground-source heat pumps installed in ancient stables

ScottishPower's Green Energy Trust has awarded a grant to install ground-source heat pumps at a project that is restoring stables which date back to the 15th century.

Castlemilk stables block was part of Castlemilk house previously belonging to the Stuart family but fell into disrepair in 1999.

The trust can provide up to 50 per cent towards the purchase of renewable products used in projects of up to a maximum of £25,000.

Alison McKean, head of environment at ScottishPower, said: "We have been amazed at the range – and scale – of the projects we have been able to help over the years with the Green Energy Trust.

Glasgow Building and Preservation Trust restored the Castlemilk stables at a total cost of £4 million.

The heating system that has been installed at the stables provides heat through radiators and underfloor heating.

It is estimated the cost of heating the building will be reduced by 50 per cent.

Under the low carbon buildings programme phase two, the government can provide a grants for the installation of solar photovoltaic, solar hot water, wind, ground source heat pump and biomass systems to charitable or public sector organisations.
