Green heat seen as key to construction carbon cutting

Housebuilders in the UK have singled out biomass boilers, ground-source heat pumps and solar heating as key elements in the drive towards sustainable construction.

Representatives for the country's biggest firms issued their suggestions as part of a wide-ranging survey about the government's zero-carbon housing targets.

Participants in construction consultant Inbuilt's poll suggested that the treasury's definition of 'zero-carbon' offers little help when it comes to designing and building green homes.

Higher construction costs were also underlined as a significant concern, as there is apparently little chance of passing these costs to buyers.

"As our discussions continued, their discomfort became palpable, expressed in warnings about the unrecoverable costs, the lack of reliable technologies, supply chain, skills or expertise, and the trouble accessing renewable energy sources," explained Dr David Strong, chief executive of Inbuilt.

He went on to underline housebuilders' desire for leaders to simplify their definition of 'zero-carbon' and enable builders to access offsite-generated renewable electricity to help meet the 2016 construction target.

Building and plumbing professionals have also drawn attention to the importance of homeowners updating their current heating systems to cut the carbon footprint of existing houses.
