Grant available to biomass producers

The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced the availability of £200,000 for biomass producers.

Farmers, foresters and biomass producers can apply for the grant worth up to a maximum of £200,000 each.

Known as the Bio-energy Infrastructure Scheme, it aims to support the biomass industry and help with the supply of biomass fuel for use in heat and electricity generation.

Phil Woolas, from Defra, said: "We have to rethink our energy mix. We know biomass has the potential to considerably reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and cut our carbon emissions."

He added that investment in the biomass industry will help farmers and other producers become part of the biomass industry, currently worth more than £25 billion.

It was recently reported in the Guardian that Drax, Britain's largest power station, is to have a £50 million biomass plant installed aimed at replacing the amount of coal it uses.
