Government confirms eco-towns locations

Plans for the UKs first eco-towns have been unveiled by government officials.

Housing minister Caroline Flint announced 15 potential locations for the dedicated green housing areas, including Bordon-Whitehill in Hampshire and Rossington in South Yorkshire.

"We have a major shortfall of housing and with so many buyers struggling to find suitable homes, more affordable housing is a huge priority," remarked Ms Flint.

"To face up to the threat of climate change, we must also cut the carbon emissions from our housing. Eco-towns will help solve both of these challenges," she added.

According to the proposals, no new eco-towns will be built on Green Belt land, while more than 30 per cent of homes will be affordably priced for low-income families.

With input from specialists in the field of sustainable building, the houses will feature the latest in green heating technology and renewable energy use, as well as high-quality plumbing and insulation to ensure minimal economic and environmental wastage.

As part of plans to build three million houses by 2020, the UK government has pledged to construct five eco-towns by 2016 and up to ten by 2020.
