Gas works - homes face disruption
HOMES and businesses face disruption following an announcement that Northern Gas Networks are to carry out widespread work in the Driffield area Work will begin around town as part of a multi-million pound investment programme from Northern Gas Networks.
The 2008/09 financial year will see the company invest more than £2million to replace more than 19 kilometres of gas mains across the East Riding of Yorkshire Council area.
The work is part of the company's £60m programme to replace nearly 568km of gas mains throughout Humberside, most of Yorkshire, Northern Cumbria and the North East.
Gas replacement in the Driffield areas will include 50m of mains in St Johns Place, 300m on New Road, Nafferton, around one km in the Bridlington Road area and around one km in the Manorfield Road vicinity.
A Spokesperson for Northern Gas Networks said: "Please bear with us, the work is vital for gas safety. We will be in and out as fast as we can"
Further details of start dates are to be announced at a later date.
United Utilities, which runs the gas mains network on behalf of Northern Gas Networks, will manage the replacement programme across East Yorkshire, which is the biggest since the company was formed in 2005.
Northern Gas Networks is the gas distribution firm for the area and is responsible for transporting gas through its 36,000km of gas mains and service pipes to 2.5 million homes and businesses across the region. During 2008 the company will invest around £160m in keeping the mains system in prime operating condition.
Basil Scarsella, Chief Executive Officer of Northern Gas Networks explained: "We have a major investment programme to replace all metal mains that are within 30m of any property during the next 25 years.
Many of the mains we are taking out are more than 50 years old, so by replacing them with modern plastic pip es we can ensure the on-going safety and reliability of the gas network for the 6.7 million people who live and work in our region and rely on us to keep the gas flowing."
"Across the region we'll be replacing almost 11km of gas mains every single week of the year.
"This does inevitably involve some disruption but we always do our best to keep the inconvenience from our activities to an absolute minimum."
Major mains replacement schemes will be carried out in most of the major towns and cities across the region. More than 27km will be replaced across Hull, 15km in York and 17km across North Yorkshire.
Customers will be given advance notification before works are carried out in their area and updated information about the progress of on-going projects is available on the Northern Gas Networks website at www.northerngasnetworks.co.uk
