Gas safety checks will cut down poisoning

COUNCIL house tenants in Bury will receive an annual gas safety service at their property — to cut down on the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Around 20 people die every year nationally from poisoning caused by improper gas appliances.

Six Town Housing, the group which manages council houses on behalf of Bury Council, will head the new initiative, which aims to check every council house they are responsible for.

The company’s gas servicing contractor will carry out evening and weekend calls this month, to complete outstanding work. Tenants who will not allow engineers into their houses could face legal action.
