Gas checks 'must not be ignored'

Council tenants who do not allow gas engineers into their homes to carry out vital safety checks have been warned they are risking their lives.
Woking Borough Council said it was legally required to carry out an annual check on gas boilers and appliances in each of its properties.

It said some tenants were persistently ignoring its letters, home visits and telephone calls to book an inspection.

Councillor Simon Bellord said carbon monoxide poisoning was a real danger.

Forced entry

"There are a persistent number of tenants who wish to put themselves and their families in danger by failing to have a gas safety check carried out," said Mr Bellord.

"It's better to be safe than sorry."

However, he said record numbers of tenants had already taken advantage of the free gas safety checks.

The council's contractor, Quadron, carries out more than 3,500 gas safety checks each year.

In the most serious cases the council can force entry to properties in order to carry out the inspection, and then charge tenants for the cost of the forced entry and a new lock.
