Gas boiler repairs should be left to professionals

DIY improvements to boilers should be carried out by professionals, says the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).

Research by Zurich Insurance shows that 16 per cent of in-home self-improvements has led to professionals being called to fix mistakes.

The NHIC commented that "tampering" with gas boilers could lead to "really big problems" and also stated that there is a risk of explosion if gas pipelines are not changed by professionals.

Andrew Leech, technical consultant to the NHIC, said: "Don't tamper with gas pipelines. It's ok if you feel you're up to it or if [the alterations are away from] the gas boiler, but when it comes to doing anything that relates to the gas boiler then you should leave it alone."

The Zurich survey also revealed that fixing boilers and central heating is the home improvement most likely to require professional help, with rewiring of electrics and plastering walls also high on the list.

In related news, the government launched its Home Information Pack in 2007 which sets out guidelines for energy-efficient home improvements and it is estimated that one-third of UK residents plan on carrying out changes.
