Fuel poor to receive government assistance
The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs has announced new measures aimed at helping the poorest consumers pay for their energy bills.
Under the new Warm Front grant scheme, the neediest will receive assistance including the installation of more efficient heating systems and be referred to their energy supplier for tariff advice so that they can make maximum savings.
Some £3 million will be used to develop energy saving micorgeneration technologies for fuel poor communities as part of the low carbon buildings programme.
Energy minister Malcolm Wicks said: "What's most important right now is making sure the most vulnerable, the elderly, the disabled and young families aren't cold in their own homes because they can't pay their bills."
He added that energy companies have now committed to providing an extra £225 million in social assistance.
The Warm Front scheme recently saw it provide its 100,000 recipient with a new heating system installed which was described to be "efficient" and "easy to use".
It is also estimated that installing underfloor heating can reduce annual energy bills by around eight per cent, according to a Telegraph report.
