Firm specialising in heating systems - Stop these cowboys!

WE had a new central heating system installed in our home by a local firm specialising in heating systems, which, we thought, seemed to be a reputable company advertising on local radio.

But we were horrified at the standard of workmanship.

We took legal advice straight away, contacted Corgi to ask for an inspector to give us an opinion on the workmanship and held back payment. In fact, we did everything by the book.

We then received a summons for non payment.

Shortly after the system was fitted and while awaiting a visit from the Corgi inspector, we discovered we had a gas leak and called Transco out. They immediately capped our gas, leaving us with a notice stating: "Gas capped due to an unsafe installation."

The Transco engineer was appalled at the standard of work carried out by the heating company and said we had done right to contact Corgi.

When the Corgi inspector came, he made notes of everything which, in his opinion, was wrong, and also told us that although he could only officially comment on gas, he strongly advised us "off the record" to contact an electrician as soon as possible as he could see that things were not quite right with the wiring this heating firm had carried out.

We received an official report from Corgi shortly after his visit.

On the evening of the Corgi inspector's visit, we lost all the power in the house. A light switch was turned on and there was a flash followed by a bang and all the power went off.

The next day electricians and plumbers were called in and we were told that, had the gas been on, we would have been "blown to bits" as the condensing gas boiler had been wired up to the lighting circuit in the loft, which is apparently extremely dangerous.

After having been without gas, heating or hot water for several months during the winter period we tried desperately to find someone who would come and rectify the problems but no one was prepared to repair someone else's work.

Eventually we had the whole system ripped out and replaced by a truly reputable company, which I would highly recommend.

A couple of years on, this case went to court. Needless to say this got us nowhere. Why? Because the legal system being what it is, all the judge was interested in was the fact that we had had a job done and not paid for it. It did not matter about the bigger picture a
nd all that was involved; that obviously was not an issue.

The firm that wrecked our home and caused us a great deal of distress, installed a central heating system which proved to be dangerous, nearly costing us our lives, should have been named and shamed. Instead they got away with it. Where's the justice in that?

We urge anyone who has any complaint with any workmanship carried out at their premises, no matter how small, to report the firm to West Yorkshire Trading Standards, where their complaint will be logged. A telephone call is all it takes.

This is the only way to stop these people from making a profit out of someone else's loss.

West Yorkshire Trading Standards will monitor these people and take the necessary action. This way there will be fewer rogue traders and the public will be protected.
