Farmers to benefit from eco-friendly boiler technology

Two leisure centres in Northern Ireland are to have green boilers installed in a bid to save energy and support local farmers.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, local authorities in the County Tyrone towns of Cookstown and Omagh have already obtained the first batch of willow wood chips which will provide fuel for the heating devices.

The last few years have seen a group of Tyrone farmers cultivate willow trees for the project, which is expected to cut oil costs by half in the towns' leisure complexes.

"Our aim was to provide the same level of service to our ratepayers, while reducing our greenhouse emissions as well as supporting local farming diversification for a sustainable future," explained Cookstown council chairman Ian McCrea.

He also pointed out to the newspaper that over 2,000 kilogrammes of willow wood chips will be needed every day to provide energy to heat the centres' swimming pools and recreational facilities.

Planet-friendly biomass boiler technology is also being used to provide heat and hot water at an energy centre being built in London's Olympic Park, the site for the 2012 Games.
