Fake gas man gets jail

Ken Parry has been jailed for working as a gas fitter with phoney credentials.

Kenneth Parry, age 52, of Alma Street, Trecynon, was found guilty of carrying out work with fake credentials, fitting boilers without proper qualifications and ignoring a prohibition order.

A further 12 offences were taken into consideration at the sentencing, held at Aberdare Magistrates’ Court on Monday (July 30).

The court heard Parry had been under investigation since 2005 for carrying out gas safety inspections and fitting boilers without a CORGI-accreddited qualification.

Instead, Parry gave customers a qualified gas worker’s registration number.

He installed a boiler for a household on Cemetery Road, Trecynon, but the owners thought they could smell gas so he returned 17 days later.

A subsequent investigation by CORGI, the gas watchdog, found Parry had not repaired the leak.

Gareth James, prosecuting for the Health and Safety Executive, said Parry had worked without reaching the “required level of competence” because he had wanted to make money.

Representing himself, Parry said: “I understand that I should not have been doing it but I am confident I never put anybody at risk.”

The defendant told the court he had fitted “hundreds” of boilers and did not believe he had endangered anybody.

Parry was jailed for four months.

Speaking after the case, Inspector Hugh Emnet, of the Health and Safety Executive, said: “This sends an important message out to bogus gas fitters.”
