Eco boost to homes

RESIDENTS in Todmorden are benefiting from a council scheme to make sure houses in the town are as energy efficient as possible.

Launched in December, Calderdale Council's pilot Warm Zone scheme in the Todmorden and Park wards is now well under way and is aiming to make every household in the two areas warmer and more comfortable.

Following a letter to inform householders they are coming, the Warm Zone assessors are visiting every property in the two wards one street at a time and each house can be considered for subsidised loft and cavity wall insulation.

Todmorden resident Fred Hunt expressed his support for the scheme. He said: "It's a brilliant scheme with lots of benefits for local residents, especially the discounted insulation. The assessment was quick and easy and I'm now looking forward to getting the advice in my energy saving report."

Insulation is available at subsidised prices to residents regardless of property size or the residents' income. Some householders can get the work done for free depending on their circumstances.

All respondents will receive a free home energy report with advice about other ways to reduce their energy use, which may help save money on fuel bills. The scheme also includes a range of other benefits including a free carbon monoxide detector and four free low energy light bulbs for every household.

Coun Clare Townley, councillor for the Todmorden ward, said: "This is great news for Todmorden, which has a lot of older, poorly insulated housing. The schem
e is a winner on all fronts: cost effective heating, reducing carbon pollution and improving residents' well-being generally, including issuing free detectors to alert against carbon monoxide poisoning."

A team of assessors are due to finish visiting homes before the end of this month.

Coun Amanda Byrne, Calderdale Council's portfolio holder for community services and affordable warmth champion, said: "The Warm Zone is a fantastic way for people to make their homes more energy efficient and early interest in the scheme from residents has been very promising."
