Coroner in warning after fumes death

A CORONER has warned people to regularly service household heating systems after the death of a pensioner from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Valerie Gallop Robinson, 75, was found dead at her home in Hafod y Mynydd, Rhymney, on Wednesday.

Opening an inquest into her death yesterday Gwent coroner David Bowen said: “I’m concerned that initial investigations point to a blocked flue in a solid flue room heater as being the likely source of the carbon monoxide which overwhelmed Mrs Gallop Robinson.

“I take this opportunity of reminding all those who have solid flue room heaters of ensuring that the flue is regularly swept and that the room is properly ventilated.”

A post-mortem examination at Neville Hall Hospital in Abergavenny also revealed Mrs Gallop Robinson suffered from heart disease. The retired seamstresses’ 92-year-old mother Elizabeth Alcott was today making a good recovery at Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil.

Mr Bowen said: “I’m pleased to note that her mother, who was also badly affected by the carbon monoxide poisoning, seems to be making a steady recovery.”

Mr Bowen, sitting in Newport, adjourned the inquest for further investigations.
