Corgi approved gas training centre
PLUMBERS and fitters will be cooking with gas in the future after the opening of a state of the art training facility in the Tees Valley.
Darlington College has joined forces with the gas industry to launch the hi-tech centre which will allow new recruits to become Corgi-approved and current staff to be reassessed every five years.
Representatives from Plumbase, Halstead Boilers, Vokera and Corgi joined college staff for the official unveiling of the centre.
It will be open to students training to become plumbers, installers and service experts as well as to private businesses in the region.
The centre features the latest gas appliances including fires, cookers and boilers.
The equipment can be deliberately rigged with faults which the engineers have to trace and rectify under the watchful eye of assessors on CCTV.
Candidates must sit eight exams, some lasting up to six hours and achieve a 100% score to pass.
Darlington College assistant director in technology Steve Richardson said: “This sort of work is very technical nowadays and requires a lot of skill.
“So we need to make sure that the workforce is trained in the right areas.
“Darlington College is the perfect environment for this and industry being involved is fundamental to the success of the initiative.”
North-east Corgi assessor Ernie Avery added: “We have seen a real rise in standards.
“But to keep abreast of changes in technology and regulations on-going training is essential.
“So there is no better time to open a regional training centre at Darlington College.”
