Charges expected in Corfu

CHARGES in relation to the deaths of a brother and sister in a Corfu hotel chalet could be brought by the end of May.
Christi and Bobby Shepherd were overwhelmed by carbon monoxide gas which seeped into their bungalow at the Louis Corcyra Beach Hotel in Corfu during a half-term holiday in October last year.

And this week their parents returned to the holiday island to meet with Greek authorities and magistrates.

Speaking from Corfu, their mum Sharon Wood told the Express the local magistrate would be sending out subpoenas and taking statements from those who may be responsible for the deaths of Christi, seven, and Bobby, six.

Mrs Wood said: Our struggle is that the Greek legal system will see individuals brought to justice, but under Greek law companies can not be prosecuted they are not responsible for the individuals who work for them.

The hotel is currently open under a 30-day licence. But on May 19 the Supreme Court in Athens will seal the hotels fate for good, deciding whether it is fit to remain open.

Also on the island is Mrs Woods husband, Paul, and the childrens father Neil Shepherd and his partner Ruth Beatson.

Mr Shepherd and Ms Beatson were also overcome by the fumes and fell into comas.

They have all been campaigning to raise awareness of the dangers posed by carbon monoxide poisoning and for better safety regulations in Corfu hotels.

Today Mr Shepherd, 38, is visiting the magistrate to see if the chalet will be needed for further investigations

Mrs Wood, 36, of Northfield Lane, Horbury, said: We want the chalet demolished as a mark of respect. What really rubbed salt into our wounds is that the Louis Corcyra held a re-launch party on May 1 and some Greek MPs were invited to stay there.
