Carbon Monoxide Awareness Campaign
The Department of Local Government and the Environment, working in partnership with CORGI (Council of Registered Gas Installers) has organised a series of ‘road shows’ to highlight the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from domestic gas, oil, or coal-fired domestic heating systems which have not been properly maintained. Often referred to as ‘the silent killer’, CO is particularly dangerous because you cannot see, taste or smell the fumes which can kill without warning in a matter of hours.
With the Winter months upon us and with people turning on their heating appliances, it is important that we alert the public to the importance of simple precautions such as regularly servicing and maintaining gas appliances through a CORGI registered installer, getting your chimney swept regularly, and having an audible CO detector (which costs around £25) in your home.
Our series of road shows is already underway, recent events being held in Douglas and Ramsey, with future events shown below. Each of these awareness raising events is hosted by a Senior Health and Safety Inspector (Brian Arnold) and a CORGI inspector (Rob Greaves). An advice leaflet is handed out and each event includes a free prize draw for an audible CO detector.
9 November – Castletown Town Hall

30 November – Peel (Shoprite, Peter Street)
3 December – Port Erin (venue to be confirmed)
6 December – Douglas (date/venue to be confirmed)
While these road shows highlight the dangers of carbon monoxide and the simple steps we can take to ensure our own safety, they also illustrate the importance of industry self-regulation and the ways in which responsible companies and organisations such as CORGI are working with the Health and Safety Inspectorate to save lives.
