Call for action over gas fitters

DEADLY gas appliances and incompetent fitters must be the subject of a firm crackdown, says MP Alan Beith. Mr Beith is among a group of MPs who have called for tighter Government legislation to police unregistered installers and services.

Mr Beith said: "We want to see a crackdown on those who install and service gas appliances who are not registered or who are just not doing the job properly. They are putting people's lives at risk.

"We are also calling on energy suppliers to provide approved CO detectors in homes, schools and workplaces, which make a noise in the same way as a smoke detector does to warn people of the presence of carbon monoxide.

"We are also asking the British holiday industry to ensure that these detectors are fitted in holiday accommodation here and overseas."

Carbon monoxide is an odourless, tasteless gas, which kills between 20 and 30 people in the UK every year. The gas can escape into homes if domestic gas appliances have not been properly installed or maintained.
