Businesses urged to bring green heat ideas to the table

Businesses in the UK have been reminded that they have until the end of the month to submit ideas to leaders on how to make the best of green heat sources.

Energy minister Malcolm Wicks issued the reminder as part of the government's drive to reduce the country's carbon emissions and achieve a fifth of Europe's energy from renewables by 2020.

"We are looking for technical contributions and firm evidence of what the government needs to do to develop renewable heat such as biomass, heat pumps and biogas," he explained.

He added that suggestions as to the role low-carbon electricity could play in heating are also welcome, as well as ideas on how surplus heat can be captured, transported and re-used to heat buildings rather than going to waste.

Research suggests that the heating of homes and businesses accounts for almost half of the nation's energy demand and nearly half of carbon dioxide emissions.

Eco-friendly heat sources such as biomass boilers and heat pumps look set to gain more prominence in the face of increasing efforts to curb these figures.
