Bringing down heat costs with earth-friendly resources
Harnessing renewable resources reduces the energy needed to heat a home to virtually nothing, it has been claimed.
Describing their home's recent green makeover, US couple Henry and Darilyn Allen revealed that the hot water produced as a by-product from their new geothermal heat pump can be piped under floors to heat their basement and bathroom.
"This reduces the energy load needed to heat and cool floors to nothing," Mrs Allen told local paper The Leaf Chronicle.
As well as the heat pump - expected to return the costs of installation in around six years - the Tennessee residents have boosted their insulation and begun to recycle shower, laundry and dish-washing water.
Mrs Allen explained that 'gray water' is any water, apart from toilet water, that has been used in the home.
Rainwater is also collected from their roof and stored in a cistern for use in their property's garden and toilet facilities.
Heating experts point out that although a geothermal heating system can cost two to three times more than a conventional system to install, the annual savings on utility bills are "substantial".
