Breaking News: School gas leak costs council 16,000

Gateshead Council has been fined £10,000 after admitting health and safety breaches that led to a carbon monoxide leak at a primary school.

The leak at Crookhill Primary School in Ryton in November 2006 led to 25 pupils and two members of teaching staff being evacuated after they were overcome with fumes. Tests carried out by the Health and Safety Executive found that carbon monoxide was being produced by an inadequately maintained boiler in the boiler plant room and leaking into the classroom above.

The council was today fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £6,830 at Gateshead Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to a charge under Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety Work etc. Act 1974.
