Bogus fitter installed gas boiler

A bogus Shrewsbury gas fitter has walked free from court despite being told that a boiler he illegally fitted could have caused someone’s death.

Martin Allan Lewis was fined £500 and must pay £500 costs after he admitted falsely claiming he was registered with gas watchdog Corgi.

Shrewsbury Magistrates Court today heard the 41-year-old, from Abbey Foregate, had fitted the gas boiler based on advice from a man he met in a pub.

He today admitted three charges of misrepresentation between December 2, 2004 and July 25, 2005.

Mrs Lindsey Blackall, prosecuting on behalf of Shropshire County Council trading standards, said Lewis agreed to fit the gas boiler after he was asked by a man for whom he had previously plumbed in a shower.

She said the defendant had then asked a man in a pub how to fit a gas boiler and filled out a log book using what he thought was a genuine Corgi registration number. He returned to the customer’s house on July 25, 2005, to carry out a check-up and again used the Corgi number.

But later that year he was called back to deal with a problem with the boiler, but then admitted he was not actually Corgi registered and could not repair the fault. Mrs Blackall said the gas watchdog was then informed and an investigation launched by trading standards.

She said the faulty boiler could have led to potentially fatal problems such as carbon monoxide poisoning.

Mrs Lynn Vowles, for Lewis, said her client had only agreed to fit the boiler because he was desperate to earn some extra money.

But she said by the time he had paid the man in the pub for his advice, Lewis had only made £60 profit.
