Bogus Corgi man got off free

THE victim of a bogus Corgi registered gas fitter whose work could have killed, has branded his punishment as an absolute disgrace.

Pauline Lewis, of Caersws, had gas and electricity work carried out at the home she shared with her husband, Andrew, and three children, Scott, Todd and Ellie-Anne, in 2006.

The man who carried out the work, which was later condemned as "unsafe" and potentially fatal, was David Mees of Llandinam, who was trading as DEE Services.

Mees, who falsely claimed he was CORGI registered, pleaded guilty to nine health and safety breaches and four trade description offences at Welshpool Magistrates Court earlier this year.

Pauline said she feels let down by the punishment Mees received, which amounted to 280 hours of community work and an order to pay a total of £6,750 costs.

Pauline said she feels Mees should have been sent to jail.
"He put my family at risk," said Pauline, "how he can sleep at night I don't know."

Of the punishment she said: "It's a disgrace to me and my family. Justice has not been done, it has been a waste of 17 months of my time. People need to realise there are people out there who will do this kind of thing.

"It's an absolute farce, I think it's a disgrace, I've gone through 17 months of hell and he's got off scot free."

Pauline said she thinks the verdict fails to act as a deterrent.
"I just feel no wonder there are so many cowboys in the world," she said
. "There are dangerous people out there playing with people's lives. If the Government does not have the right legislation in place they won't stop them.

"I was absolutely livid. I cannot believe there are people like that out there but they do exist, I have seen them myself."

The gas and electricity work Mees carried out at Pauline's property in Caersws was condemned as unsafe by CORGI and an independent electrician
Pauline said the situation has had a lasting effect on her family.

She said: "My son still does not believe our house is safe. He has nightmares over it and it's down to that man."

Pauline urged anyone requiring the services of gas workers or electricians to ensure they are not fraudulent.

"People should never be scared to ask," she said, "do not be fooled by anyone, always get them checked out. Always ask for ID, after all it's your family's lives at stake."
